How Do I Know If I Have a Cyclospora Infection?
Only a doctor can make a diagnosis of a Cyclospora infection. If you have eaten bagged salads and have become sick, urgent medical attention is recommended. Also, early medical treatment can greatly reduce the risk for long-term complications.
It is best not to panic, but it is a good idea to monitor your health and symptoms in the days after eating the food products.
The Outbreak
CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating a multistate outbreak of 122 Cyclospora infections linked to bagged salad mix purchased at ALDI, Hy-Vee, and Jewel-Osco stores in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. 19 people have been hospitalized.
The outbreak case numbers are expected to rise as illnesses reported may not yet be linked to the outbreak. This is because it typically takes 2 to 4 weeks for illnesses to be linked to an outbreak, there are likely more illnesses out there.
Although the investigation is ongoing, CDC’s analysis of epidemiologic information indicates that these bagged salads from ALDI, Hy-Vee and Jewel-Osco grocery stores are a likely cause of the illnesses. FDA has initiated a traceback investigation to determine supplier and distributor information to find the cause and source of the outbreak.
FDA is in the beginning stages of this investigation and there may be additional retailers and products impacted by this outbreak. As this outbreak investigation continues, the FDA will provide additional updates to this advisory as more information becomes available.

*The symptoms of a Cyclospora infection usually begin within 2–14 or more days of ingesting contaminated food.
* Symptoms of a Cyclospora infection include:
- Frequent bouts of watery diarrhea
- Loss of appetite and weight
- Abdominal cramps, bloating and flatulence
- Nausea and vomiting
- Low grade fever
* In some cases, diarrhea and infection spread may be so severe that the ill person requires hospitalization.
The Investigation
People with laboratory-confirmed Cyclospora infections and who reported eating bagged salad mix before getting sick have been reported from 6 states (Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Minnesota).
Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 11, 2020 to June 14, 2020.
Epidemiologic evidence indicates that ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad, Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad, or Jewel-Osco Signature Farms Garden Salad are likely sources of this outbreak, but does not explain all of the cases.
We do know from the CDC that”
- At least 20 people in this cluster shopped at ALDI, and of those, at least 16 (80%) people specifically report purchasing bagged salad mix – most reported the Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad.
- At least 37 people in this cluster shopped at Hy-Vee, and of those, at least 16 (43%) people specifically report purchasing bagged salad mix from Hy-Vee – most reported the Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad.
- At least 6 people in this cluster shopped at Jewel-Osco, and of those, at least 5 (80%) people specifically report purchasing bagged salad mix from Jewel-Osco – most reported the Signature Farms Brand Garden Salad.
