How Do I Know If I Have a Cyclospora Infection?
Only a doctor can make a diagnosis of a Cyclospora infection. If you have eaten imported basil and have become sick, urgent medical attention is recommended. Also, early medical treatment can greatly reduce the risk for long-term complications.
It is best not to panic, but it is a good idea to monitor your health and symptoms in the days after eating the food products.
The Outbreak
The local media reports that 132 people are sick with cyclospora linked to fresh basil imported from Mexico. The outbreak case numbers are expected to rise as illnesses reported may not yet be linked to the outbreak. This is because it typically takes 2 to 4 weeks for illnesses to be linked to an outbreak, there are likely more illnesses out there.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that ill people were exposed to fresh basil exported by Siga Logistics de RL de CV located in Morelos, Mexico.
The outbreak statistics currently are:
- Total Confirmed Illnesses: 132
- Hospitalizations: 4
- Deaths: 0 (Thankfully!)
- Last illness onset: July 9, 2019
- States with Cases: CT, FL, GA, IA, MA, MN, NY, OH, RI, SC, WI.
- Exposures occurred at restaurants in four states: FL, MN, NY, OH

*The symptoms of a Cyclospora infection usually begin within 2–14 or more days of ingesting contaminated food.
* Symptoms of a Cyclospora infection include:
- Frequent bouts of watery diarrhea
- Loss of appetite and weight
- Abdominal cramps, bloating and flatulence
- Nausea and vomiting
- Low grade fever
* In some cases, diarrhea and infection spread may be so severe that the ill person requires hospitalization.
The Investigation
The FDA has announced that they “along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora illnesses potentially linked to fresh basil exported by Siga Logistics de RL de CV located in Morelos, Mexico.”
Although the investigation is ongoing, CDC’s analysis of epidemiologic information indicates that contaminated fresh basil is the likely cause of the illnesses. FDA’s traceback investigation indicates that the fresh basil available at points of sale where consumers became ill was exported to the United States by Siga Logistics de RL de CV located in Morelos, Mexico. FDA has requested a voluntary recall and the firm has agreed. FDA has increased import screening on basil and will continue to investigate the cause and source of the outbreak as well as the distribution of products.
